Nov 18, 2014

Woman multitasking in the kitchen, cooking with a wooden spoon in one hand and a laptop track pad in the other, while talking on her mobile phone.

Cooking for family, friends and other guests over the holidays can often be stressful and intimidating. How much turkey should I buy for 12 people? How do I store all these leftovers? What can I substitute for baking powder? To make your holiday cooking and baking a more joyful experience, turn to these hotlines, websites and live chats for assistance from experts.

Let’s talk turkey (and ham)

The hotline that started it all, Butterball’s Turkey Talk-Line(R) answers thousands of turkey-related calls every November and December. Call 1-800-288-8372 Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm EST (closed Christmas Day) to speak with a knowledgeable turkey professional, or you can email them or send a message for live chat.

For all your ham-related questions, call the Kentucky Legend Ham Hotline at 1-866-343-5058. The hotline is open Christmas Eve until 7:00 pm and Christmas Day from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm EST. You can also submit questions in writing or get holiday ham FAQs at the Kentucky Legend Ham Headquarters.

Even expert bakers can experience problems with holiday baking. Fortunately, several hotlines and websites exist to make your holiday baking easy as pie.

Speaking of pie, the Crisco Pie Hotline -- 1-877-367-7438 -- can help guide you through any pie questions or catastrophes. The hotline is staffed Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 7:00 pm EST from mid-December through Christmas Eve, though you can hear recorded tips and tricks 24 hours a day.

Call the Fleischmann’s Yeast Baker’s Help Line at 1-800-777-4959 for assistance with your holiday breads. The help line is staffed Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm EST year-round, but is closed on major holidays.

The King Arthur Flour Baker’s Hotline is staffed with expert bakers standing by to answer questions and remedy your baking emergencies. You can call, email or chat live with a professional.

Ran out of a crucial ingredient and the stores are already closed? The Emergency Baking Substitutes compiled by Better Homes and Gardens can turn a potential mess into success.
