Savannah and Fort Pierce Culinary Students Compete; Century Restaurant Celebrates Its Century-old Home

Culinard students in Savannah recently participated in their first public cooking challenge—with an audience of over 15,000 people.

The occasion was the fourth annual Savannah Food Day Festival, an event that is part of a nationwide movement for healthy, affordable and sustainable food. Thousands of people packed Daffin Park on Sunday for the festival.

New this year was an “Iron Chef”-style challenge involving Culinard students working in pairs. Each team had 45 minutes to create its best dish using secret ingredients such as pumpkin seeds, coconut milk, jalapeno and mint.

Culinard program director Amberley Rowe-Stewart reported that the students were excited and that the standing-room-only audience “didn’t faze them one bit!”

Culinard students from Fort Pierce took top honors at the recent Slow Food Gold and Treasure Coast Florida Pumpkin Recipe Cook Off.

Century Restaurant and Bar/Culinard Catering in Birmingham recently helped the Tutwiler Hotel celebrate its 100th Anniversary. Featured guests included Birmingham’s Mayor William Bell and Temple Tutwiler, a descendant of the original co-owner, Major Tutwiler.

The original hotel was a 13-story brick and limestone luxury hotel on the southeast corner of 5th Avenue North and 20th Street in downtown Birmingham. It moved to its current location in 1986.

Century Restaurant and Bar/Culinard Catering is affiliated with Culinard, the Culinary Institute of Virginia College and provides externship and employment opportunities to graduates.
