Culinard chef instructors give and get culinary honors

Alabama's top high school culinary arts students competed recently at Culinard, the Culinary Institute of Virginia College in Birmingham. Participants were there to earn top state awards and a possible spot to represent Alabama at the upcoming 2012 Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida.

The winning team was Hewitt Trussville High School, Trussville, Ala., coached by former Culinard Pastry instructor Laura Halpin.

Judges for the event included Chef Antony Osborne, Dean of Culinard; Dr. Louis Pineda, Culinard graduate; Chef Doug Allen, Executive Chef, UAB Hospital; Chef Jason Lafferty, Program Director, Culinard/Mobile; James Robinson, Manager, C&I Food Service Marketing; Chef Chris Kennedy, The Club; and Chef Chris Dupont, owner, Café Dupont.

FCCLA is a national, non-profit organization devoted to preparing family and consumer sciences students for leadership and future career opportunities. Alabama has more than 7,000 members who enjoy the many benefits this organization offers.

Pastry Chef Instructor Thomas Mair from the Birmingham Culinard campus was awarded the Silver medal at the 2012 Culinary Master Chef Challenge at the Wind Creek Casino and Hotel in Atmore, Ala.

The challenge was judged by an experienced panel of international judges using standards from the American Culinary Federation.
